SUBSTANTIVE
LINE EDITING

Substantive line editing focuses on creating clear, concise, and polished sentences and paragraphs as well as engaging with the substantive content of your evidence and argument, resulting in text that flows smoothly and makes a convincing argument. This service includes correcting errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation, as well as fixing incorrect word usage and ensuring consistency within the text. In addition, I adjust sentence structure, correcting awkward or unclear phrasing and ensuring the clarity of the arguments in the text. I also provide comments on the overall organization and flow of the paper. I eliminate wordiness and unnecessary jargon, rearrange text to improve readability (if needed), smooth transitions, recommend sections that could be deleted, and suggest additional points you may want to explore in the text. I note and help you clarify any flaws in the logical arguments or any gaps in the literature review. If desired, I also provide comments on how to better appeal to your specific audience. Line editing occurs at the sentence level using track changes and commenting tools. For longer projects, I create a style sheet in which I record the editorial and style decisions I have implemented as well as style guide rules for future reference.

Developmental editing (sometimes called manuscript assessment or evaluation) focuses on big-picture feedback. Based on a close reading of the manuscript, I create an editorial report that identifies the key strengths and weaknesses of the manuscript and outlines a clear path forward as you revise the text. I also leave questions, comments, and suggestions in the text when appropriate. The editorial report contains feedback on three key aspects of the manuscript. First, I comment on the structure and organization of the manuscript, offering suggestions for how to reorganize chapters or sections to improve clarity. Second, I assess the strength of argumentation, identifying gaps in logic or the literature review and places where further clarification is needed. Third, I suggest ways to improve readability, noting points where the text is unfocused or tangential; identifying passages where you can reduce jargon, revise with plainer language, smooth transitions, or add examples; and discussing how you can more effectively address your target audience. Together, the editorial report and comments will help you fashion a manuscript that clearly communicates your core theoretical and empirical arguments, highlighting the contributions of your research to the field.

For book manuscripts, you can combine line editing and developmental editing, if desired. I also meet with clients who are in the earlier stages of developing a manuscript—or those who are stuck in the messy middle stages—to forge a plan for how to proceed with the project. I can meet via Zoom or phone to discuss your project so we can jointly identify your goals and determine the scope of the work.

Writing services includes summarizing and sometimes consolidating academic manuscripts to produce short briefs for either academic or lay audiences or summaries for a grant proposal.
